  • Description

African and White Rhodesian demonstrated in Salisbury on Friday (18 September) against an order banning Bishop Muzorewa, head of the United Methodist Church (American) in Rhodesia, from entering tribal trust lands. He has said the ban will "cripple" his work as most of the Church's 55,000 members live in these areas.

Bishop Muzorewa has petitioned President Clifford Dupont to lift the ban, for which no reason has been given. The Bishop says that if he ignores the order he could be tried in court and given a sentence of up to 50 Rhodesian dollars (GBP34 Sterling) or three months's imprisonment.

"I have been praying and thinking about this", he said, "and I will do what my conscience dictates and is in harmony with the spirit of Christ".

He believes that the Government thinks he is preaching politics "whereas in fact I'm trying to bring goodwill to men".

Bishop Muzorewa was visiting a tribal trust land when the news of the ban came through. "It came when I was at a meeting. We counted 9,910 people, believe it or not. There was silence for a short time and then they broke into weeping".

Friday's demonstration was held in the centre of Salisbury, near to the Prime Minister's office. The placard-carrying demonstrators made their protest in silence.
