  • Description

WIDESPREAD DISTURBANCES CONTINUED IN NORTHERN RHODESIA, AUG. 25. AND THE FOLLOWING DAY - IN LONdON - MR. KENNETH KAUNDA, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PARTY, SAID THAT "EVEN MORE VIOLENCE" COULD BE EXPECTED UNLESS AN INDEPENDENT COMMISSION OF INQUIRY WAS SET UP TO EXAMINE THE POLITICAL SITUATION THERE.

IN THE FORT ROSEBERY AREA, MILITARY PATROLS TOURED VILLAGES. SPOTTER PLANES OF THE ROYAL RHODESIAN AIR FORCE FLEW OVER OTHER VILLAGES TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY GATHERINGS OF PEOPLE THAT THE POLICE SHOULD LOOK INTO. U.N.I.P. IS NOW OUTLAWED.

SUPPORTERS OF KAUNDA CONTINUED TO BURN THEIR IDENTITY PAPERS (REQUIRED BY LAW TO BE CARRIED) IN THEIR CAMPAIGN OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE. POLICE EXAMINED THE REMAINS OF LARGE-SCALE BURNINGS. LARGE NUMBERS OF WEAPONS HAVE BEEN SEIZED BY THE POLICE IN SURPRISE RAIDS ON VILLAGES.

AND AT SANFIA, ARRESTED AFRICANS CONSIDERED BY THE AUTHORITIES TO BE TROUBLE-MAKERS WERE PUT IN THE LOCAL JAIL.
