  • Description

Almost half the earth's surface is what is known as permafrost, permanently frozen soil. This makes it very difficult to build anything. A town built on perma-frost in Canada during the war has collapsed. A delegation of building workers from Canada recently visited Norilsk. They expressed their amazement at the scope and techniques of Soviet construction and its low costs.

This is how it is done.

A long reinforced concrete pile is sunk into a borehole, which is then filled with a liquid solution. A few hours later it freezes. Perma-frost is thus made to help man, instead of being his enemy.

The homes are suspended 2 metres above the ground. Special heating devices are used to prevent the concrete from freezing. They come up with the walls.

The water supply runs through specially heated pipes so as not to upset temperature conditions.

This method has out the cost of building pile bases by 50 per cent. This is very important in the Far North, the land of permanent frosts and polar night, Building time has been reduced by 80-85%. This allows for a continuous building process.
