Background: World Boxing Council junior welterweight champion Saensak Muangsurin of Thailand won a unanimous points decision over Japanese challenger Tetsuo "Lion" Furuyama in Tokyo on Sunday (25 January).

It was Saensak's first defence of the title he won from Pedro "Perico" Fernandez of Spain in Bangkok last year.

Saensak, 24, a former Thai kick boxer, got off to a slow start and boxed defensively for the first four rounds.

He blocked the aggressive Furuyama's punches, then succeeded in opening a cut above the challenger's left eye in the sixth round.

Saensak split furuyama's right eye two rounds later and by the 13th round, both the challenger's eyes were so puffed by the champion's hard rights and lefts, he could hardly see.

Filipino referee, Enrique Jiminez, scored Saensak 146 to the challenger's 143, Thai judge Veravat Hiranyalaka decided 148-139 in Saensak's favour and Japanese judge Ken Morita voted 147-144 for the champion.

Sunday's fight was Saensak's fifth win in five bouts since switching from Thai boxing in November 1974.

It was Furuyama's third unsuccessful attempt at the title since 1973...He has a record of 32 wins, 10 losses and four draws.
