    JAPAN'S RULING LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY (L.D.P.) HAS BEEN RETURNED TO POWER THIS WEEK BUT WITH 13 FEWER SEATS THAN IT WON IN 1960, (FROM 296 TO 283). AND FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1949 THE SOCIALIST OPPOSITION PARTY FAILED TO GAIN GROUND. IT WON ONE LESS SEAT THAN IN 1960.

    THE BIG SURPRISE OF THE ELECTION WAS THE SLIGHT RECOVERY OF THE DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS WHO INCREASED THEIR REPRESENTATION INCREASED FROM THREE TO FIVE SEATS.

    AMONG THOSE WHO LOST SEATS WAS MR. TANZAN ISHIBASHI, 79, A FORMER PRIME MINISTER.
