  • Description

On a recent visit to Paris Dom Camara the outspoken Bishop of Recife, spoke sharply against the torture of political prisoners in Brazilian jails. The Bishop has now returned to his diocese in Brazil where he is organising the building of cheap housing projects for the poor.

Speaking in French at the Palais dessports in Paris, he said that the torture of political prisoners in Brazilian jails is more the rule than the exception. He was sure, however, that if called upon to provide proof of these allegations, the fear of the torture victims of further torture would make this impossible. He pointed out that when talking about violence it is important of define one's terms - does one mean the violence of the oppressed, or the violence of the oppressors. What one should be striving for, he said, was not merely the abolition of torture in Brazil, or Latin America, but the end of misery in all the underdeveloped countries of the world.
