    The funeral of Dr Hashem Jawad, former resident representative of the United Nations development programme in Lebanon was held in Beirut on Saturday (14 October).

    Dr. Jawed of Iraq was shot and killed in his office by his former driver on October 12. The former Iraqi Foreign Minister was 61.

    The former employee shot Dr Jawad five times, wounded a driver who tried to catch him and then committed suicide.

    Dr. Jawad was rushed to hospital but was dead on arrival the killer also died before reaching hospital. He was a Palestinian, Ahmed Mahmoud Al-Jaafari. he had worked as Dr. Jawad's driver until ten days before the shooting. United Nations sources said his contract had not been renewed, "because of his bad manners". There was no apparent political motive for the killing.

    Dr. Jawad was appointed as resident representative of the U.N. development programme in 1966. The programme aims to help low income countries make maximum use of their own resources and potential. He was an economist and labour specialist who studied at the American University of Beirut and the London school of Economics. Dr Jawad served as Iraqi Foreign Minister from 1959 until 1963. He leaves a widow and two children. The funeral service was held at Beirut's Great Mosque.

    Dr. Jawad's body was taken to the Great Mosque in a hearse draped with the United Nations flag. he had been the resident representative in Beirut for the United Nations development programme. He had held the post since 1966. He served as Iraq's Foreign Minister from 1959 until the overthrow of Lieutenant General Kassem's regime in 1963. There was no apparent political motive for the killing. The murderer, a Palestinian, walked into Dr Jawad's office and opened fire with a pistol. The man shot Dr Jawad five times, wounded a driver who tried to catch him and then committed suicide. Dr. Jawad, an economist and labour specialist, leaves a widow and two children.
