  • Description

The Bristol/Ferranti Bloodhound guided weapon, which is now in production for the Royal Air Force, is to be made available to certain Commonwealth and West European countries.

The Ministry of Supply has agreed to release to those countries information about the weapon system within prescribed security limits.

Bloodhound is the type of supersonic missile, which, in time, will replace the manned fighter 'plane as the first line of defence.

Bristol Aircraft Ltd. has borne the overall responsibility of the successful production of Bloodhound - one of the first practical guided weapon is the United Kingdom. Bristol Aero-Engines Ltd has concurrently developed and is now producing the ramjet units used to drive the missiles; Ferranti Ltd have devised, and designed, and are producing the intricate radar and serve control equipment needed to guide the weapon automatically to its target.

The Bloodhound is more that a surface-to-air guided missile; it is a complete defence system which has been designed and tested to act as such. In simple terms, the missile system in the following way: radar stations at strategic points around the cast give early warning of the approach of aircraft, and this information is passed automatically to central pest of the nearest battery of missiles. The central past automatically assesses when the target is within range and sends out signals which fires off as many missiles as necessary.

The system could differentiate between one aircraft and two flying in close formation, thus permitting each to be attacked separately.

The Bristol Ramjet is capable of accelerating the missile from rest to 1000 mph within a few seconds.
