    ALSO PRESENT AT THE PALACE AUDIENCE WAS KENYATTA'S DAUGHTER, WHO WAS ENTERTAINED IN CONVERSATION BY THE EMPEROR'S SON, CROWN PRINCE ASSFAW WOSSEN.

    A PERSONAL FRIEND OF THE EMPEROR SINCE THE TIME OF THE ETHIOPIAN LEADER'S ENFORCED EXILE IN LONDON, KENYATTA WAS HONORARY SECRETARY AT THE "INTERNATIONAL FRIENDS OF ABSSINIA", AND ORGANISATION SET UP IN LONDON DURING THE ITALIAN OCCUPATION OF ETHIOPIA.

    KENYATTA, WHO STOPPED OFF AT ADDIS ABABA AFTER LEADING A KANU DELEGATION TO LONDON FOR TALKS WITH MR. REGINALD MAUDLING, THE COLONIAL SECRETARY, RETURNED TO NAIROBI NOVEMBER 19, TO BE WELCOMED BY A LARGE CROWD OF SUPPORTERS. IN AN AIRPORT SPEECH HE SAID: "WE WANT FREEDOM BY FEBRUARY 1ST NEXT YEAR, AND WHETHER ANYONE LIKES IT OR NOT WE ARE GOING TO ACHIEVE IT". MR. MAUDLING IS WIDELY REPORTED AS HAVING INDICATED THAT MID-1963 IS THE FIRST FEASIBLE DATE FOR KENYA'S INDEPENDENCE.
