  • Description

Voting got under way in the Irish Republic on Wednesday (30 May) to choose a new President, to succeed Eamon de Valera.

The two candidates in the field were Erskine Childers, aged 68, and Tom O'Higgins, aged 56.

Mr. Childers, a Protestant, represents the Fianna Fail party, which was thrown out of office in last February's general election. He claims that a win for him would improve the chances of reconciliation with Protestant Northern Ireland.

Mr. O'Higgins is a Roman Catholic barrister, representing the Fine Gael-Labour coalition, which won the February election. Both candidates have pledged to play a more active part in public affairs.

Mr. de Valera, a founding father of the Irish Republic, is retiring after two seven-year spells as President. He is 90.
