THEY DRIVE PRODUCTION AUTOMOBILES - BOTH TOURING AND SPORTS MODELS - AS WELL AS SPECIALLY BUILT COMPETITION CARS AND MODIFIED STOCK CARS.

    IN THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF THE TRIALS, ONE DRIVER PUSHED HIS CLASS B STREAMLINER TO 302.8 MILES AN HOUR, A NEW RECORD FOR THE CLASS. HE IS BOB McGRATH OF REDDING, CALIFORNIA. ANOTHER RECORD FELL IN THE SPORTS CAR CLASS, WHEN KNOW FARRINGTON OF NEW ORLEANS SPED ACROSS THE SALT FOR A TWO-DAY AVERAGE OF 241.8 MILES AN HOUR. NORMAL THATCHER - A 66 YEAR OLD GRANDFATHER AND PROFESSIONAL DRIVER - HIT 195.7 MILES PER HOUR ON SUNDAY (18 AUGUST), IN A STOCK PASSENGER CAR WITH A SPECIAL ENGINE. HE IS TRYING TO DRIVE THE CAR AT BETTER THAN 200 MILES PER HOUR.
