  • Description

A new anti-pollution "Bulldozer boat" is being put to use in New York Harbour. British built, it is called the Water Witch Mark Two, and was initially designed to clean up Britain's River Thames.

Twenty eight feet long, the craft uses an hydraulically operated wire mesh scoop on its bows to shift rubbish and debris from the surface of the water. Bought at a cost of forty seven thousand U.S. dollars (almost twenty thousand pounds sterling), the craft has impressed New York City officials, who have said that they hope the United States Army Corps of Engineers will purchase a number of them. The Corps of Engineers are the body responsible for the maintenance of navigable waters.

Other Water Witch craft are currently in use in Baltimore, Chicago, and Hong Kong.
