    SOUTH KOREAN TROOPS DESTINED FOR SERVICE IN SOUTH VIETNAM WERE PRESENTED WITH THEIR COLOURS AT A PARADE NEAR THE 38TH PARALLEL ON FRIDAY (FEBRUARY 5). TWO THOUSAND MEN FROM THE ARMY, MARINES AND THE NAVY TOOK PART IN THE CEREMONY BEFORE MR. SEUNG EUN KIM, SOUTH KOREA'S DEFENCE MINISTER, AND GENERAL HAMILTON HOWZE, COMMANDER OF THE U.N. FORCES IN KOREA.

    THE DECISION TO SEND SOUTH KOREAN TROOPS TO SOUTH VIETNAM WAS TAKEN LAST MONTH AND APPROVED SHORTLY AFTERWARDS BY THE SOUTH KOREAN PARLIAMENT. THE UNIT IS TO ACT IN ONLY A SUPPORT CAPACITY AND CONSISTS OF AN ENGINEERS BATTALION, A SELF-DEFENCE INFANTRY BATTALION, ONE ENGINEERS COMPANY, ONE COMPANY OF MARINES AND A SMALL NAVY UNIT TO CREW A LANDING SHIP TANKS (LST).

    DURING THE CEREMONY, HELD 45 MILES (73 KMS) NORTH SEOUL, GENERAL HOWZE PRAISED THE CONTINGENT FOR THEIR TOUGHNESS, FIGHTING ABILITY AND FOR THEIR SPIRIT OF PATRIOTISM.

    IT IS NOT KNOWN WHEN THE UNIT WILL LEAVE FOR SOUTH VIETNAM, BUT THEY ARE DUE TO BE GIVEN A MASS FAREWELL ON FEBRUARY 9.
