  • Description

The Niger Republic celebrated its tenth anniversary on Friday (December 18). President Hamani Diroi, who has been president since independence was declared, reviewed the anniversary parade through the streets of Niamey.

The President arrived at the Place du Petit Marche and inspected a guard of honour. The national anthem was then played before President Diori reviewed the armed forces detachments in the parade from a landrover. The landrover was one of 20 presented to the Niger Government by the Government of Canada on independence day.

Just prior to the celebrations beginning, President Diori had signed a convention with Canada for the financing of a road linking Eastern Niger with the rest of the country. The 460-kilometre (286-mile) road will cost some 3,500 million CFA Francs (about 5,300,000 sterling).

The "children of independence"--those born in the first year of independence--were given a place of honour in the parade. Following behind them were the "young pioneers" and horsemen from the different cantons of Niger. The parade was along a street newly christened "General de Gaulle Avenue".

A republic was proclaimed in Niger on December 18, 1958 and became independent on August 3, 1960.
