  • Description

Seven West German guerrillas--at least one of them reported to be a woman--shot their way into the West German Embassy in Stockholm on Thursday (24 April) and seized 12 hostages to back up their demands that the Bonn Government free 26 accused anarchists held in West Germany.

Nearly 12 hours later, when it was learned the West German authorities had refused to accede to the guerrillas' demands, a number of shots were heard from inside the Embassy, and soon after that to huge explosions rocked the four-storey building and set the top floor ablaze. Early reports said the guerrillas had released three women among their hostages before the explosions, that a number of others had been found alive in the building and that police had captured all seven guerrillas.

Both the guerrillas who seized the Embassy and those whose release they demanded were members of the notorious Baader-Meinhoff Group, whose leaders are scheduled to go on trial for anarchy next month in Stuttgart.

This is the same group which last February Kidnapped the West Berlin opposition leader, Peter Lorenz, and freed him only after the West German Government had released five of the Baader-Meinhoff Group and flown them to South Yemen. Police speculated that Thursday's Embassy raiders were Herr Lorenz's kidnappers, who were believed to have escaped from Germany after an intensive manhunt.

Calling itself the Holger Meins Commando--after Holger Meins, a member of the Baader-Meinhoff Group who died in prison last November after a hunger strike--the guerrilla unit that stormed the Embassy in Stockholm fatally wounded its military attache i the attack and threatened to shoot one hostage an hour if its demands were not met.
