Background: Akio Usami of Japan won the pre-Olympics marathon in Munich yesterday afternoon (12 September), the final day of the mini-Olympics staged to test preparations for next year's Olympic Games.

Usami covered the distance it two hours, 15 minutes and 52 seconds, over the previously untested course. He was followed in second place by Kanji Kimihara, Japanese silver medallist from the mexico Olympics. Third was the little-known Czech runner Vaclav Mladek.

Commonwealth Games champion Ron Hill of Britain, the pre-race favourite, withdrew shortly before the start because of injury.

SYNOPSIS: In Munich, West Germany, police were out in force on Sunday afternoon to clear next year's Olympic marathon course for a trial run by some of the world's leading marathon runners. Thirteen hundred police and 800 soldiers were brought in to ensure that not one parked car should obstruct the course. The marathon route winds through the city centre as well as the grounds of Nymphenburg Castle.

As they wound through the city centre Akio Usami - number 17 - still dominated the race. Britain's Ron Hill, the pre-race favourite, withdrew before the start because of injury.

Tsugumichi of Japan here being chased by Toth of Hungary - after the race some of the competitors complained that too much the course lay over gravel and not enough on tarred roads. There were also grumbles about the number of confusing twists and turns. Julian of New Zealand and Japan's Yasunori were chased and later passed by Mladek of Czechoslovakia, who took third place.

Unetani of Japan was going well...in the closing stages - but his team-mate Akio Usami was first home in 2 hours 15 minutes 52 seconds.

And Kanji Kimihara, Japan's Silver medallist at the Mexico Olympics, was second. All in all a great day for the Japanese runners.
