  • Description

Peter Revson drove a brilliant tactical race at Riverside California on Sunday (31 October) to become the first American to win the Canadian-American (Can-Am) motor racing challenge cup.

The 32-year-old New Yorker needed only to finish sixth or better in this the 10th and final race of the season to clinch the championship. His team mate and his closest rival New Zealander Denis Hulme ran away with first place driving an identical car to Revson's - a Gulf-McLaren M8F Chevrolet.

After Sunday's victory, Hulme ended up an overall second to Revson in the Can-Am championship.
