Background: Pre-trial hearings began on Tuesday (16 March) for Angela Davis and Ruchell Magee. The two are accused of kidnapping and murder in connection with a kidnap-escape attempt, which occurred in the same Marin County Courthouse where they are now going to trial. A Superior Court judge and three persons involved in the incident were killed in a gunbattle outside the courthouse.
Tuesday's pre-trial proceedings were delayed by two separate bomb threats, which twice forces the evacuation of 1,2000 people from county offices and the court. About 400 supporters of Miss Davis demonstrated outside the court to demand her release.
The judge holding the pre-trial hearings disqualified himself from the case on a legal challenge from Miss Davis' co-defendant, Ruchell Magee. The challenge, in the form of a handwritten petition, cited "cause" against the judge. There was no further clarification. The surprise decision will force an indefinite postponement until the state appoints another judge.
Miss Davis, a self-proclaimed communist and former philosophy lecturer at the University of California at Los Angeles is accused of supplying the four guns used in the kidnap-escape attempt. Under California law, the person supplying weapons is as guilty as those who commit the crime.
