He acknowledged the broadcast in which he described the triumph of his supporters over those of leftwing President Juan Torres as "an indelible step in the history of Bolivia."
    Bolivia's new rightwing regime has followed up the fighting at the weekend against forces loyal to the former President with a notice that it will get tough with any opponents. About 100 people are estimated to have died in the fighting, and a further 500 injured.

    SYNOPSIS: A crowd of cheering supporters gathered outside the Presidential Palace in La Paz on Sunday when the new President of Bolivia, 43-year-old Colonel Huge Banzer, took his presidential oath. President Banzer is flanked by uniformed army leaders who helped him the coup.

    Bolivia's new rightwing regime is the 150th government in 146 years of independence. The former President, Juan Torres, has taken refuge in the Peruvian embassy. In the fighting of the coup over the weekend an estimated one hundred people died and a further 500 injured.

    After taking the oath President Banzer broadcast to the nation that "an indelible step had been taken in the history of Bolivia." He also said his government would get tough with any opponents. But he announced that he would not think in terms of left or right. His guiding line, he said, would be nationalism.
