  • Description

Roger Taylor of Britain, the Third Seed in the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, beat Sixth-Seeded Bjorn Borg of Sweden in a gruelling hard-fought five-set match before a packed crowd on the Centre Court on Thursday(3 July).

Taylor's victory, while a popular one, broke the hearts of thousands of teenage girls. The blonde 17-year-old Swede has become the heart-throb of the Wimbledon Championships. Several young girls rushed onto the sacred turf when the match was over to commiserate with their thwarted hero. Taylor stood by as press photographers clustered around the loser.

Taylor's win came after five close-fought sets, 6-1,6-8,3-6,6-3,7-5 in a tense quarterfinal match which lasted for two-hours 35-minutes.

While the tennis could never rate as great, with fortunes changing all the time, the match was always absorbing. Taylor won in the end because of his confident start - he took the first set in only 20-minutes - and because his nerves and experience proved steadier when the match neared its climax.

Taylor, the British left-hander who defied the Association of Tennis Professionals' boycott to play at Wimbledon, at no time during the contest played anything near approaching his best tennis. He doubled faulted 20 times and his serving generally was far below standard.

There was further drama at Match Point. Taylor stood at 40-30 in the 12th game of the final set and served for the match. His service looked out, but there was no call from the line judge and the umpire declared Taylor the winner. Borg immediately protested vehemently to the linesman. Taylor also supported Borg's pleas. Eventually the judge changed his decision and the umpire ruled they should play a let.

Borg lived again, but only briefly. He took the replayed point to make it deuce, but Taylor came back to clinch his victory and go through into his third Wimbledon semi-final. Taylor now meets second-seeded Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia.
