  • Description

FIVE DIED AND OVER 100 OTHERS WERE INJURED DURING VIOLENT STUDENT RIOTING IN MANILA ON FRIDAY NIGHT. RIOTING BEGAN AFTER A PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION BY 15,000 FILIPINOS PROTESTING AGAINST ALLEGED POLICE BRUTALITY DURING A DEMONSTRATION THE PREVIOUS MONDAY.

RIOT POLICE FOUGHT WITH 400 RIOTERS -- MAINLY STUDENTS -- WHO TRIED TO FORCE THEIR WAY INTO THE PALACE GROUNDS. THE FIVE WHO DIED WERE KILLED BY GUNSHOT WOUNDS, THOUGH POLICE SAID THEY ONLY FIRED OVER THE HEADS OF THE DEMONSTRATORS.

SEVERAL DEMONSTRATORS MANAGED TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE GROUNDS OF MALACANANG PALACE, HOME OF PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS. BUT IN A STATEMENT LATER THE PRESIDENT SAID THESE WERE NOT STUDENTS, BUT ORGANISED PLOTTERS WANTING TO OVERTHROW THE FILIPINO GOVERNMENT AND SET UP A NEW REGIME OF COMMUNISM OF MAOIST NATURE.

PRESIDENT MARCOS, WHO WAS IN THE PALACE WITH HIS FAMILY DURING THE RIOTING, ISSUED A STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE "SAVAGE AND UNJUSTIFIED ATTACK." HE CALLED A SPECIAL EMERGENCY MEETING ON SATURDAY TO DISCUSS THE SITUATION.
