  • Description

An East German airliner on a charter flight landed at the wrong Bombay airfield on Wednesday (December 14). The pilot touched down at the small Juhu airstrip instead of the large Santa Cruz airport.

He made the same mistake as the pilot of a Japanese airliner in September. The East German aircraft ended up struck in soft ground near the wreckage of the Japanese aircraft--but experts later said it could be pulled out with little difficulty once it was unloaded.

SYNOPSIS: An East German airliner joined a Japanese 'plane in the mud at Juhu airstrip, near Bombay, on Wednesday.

The pilot made exactly the same mistake as the Japanese captain made in September. He mistook the airstrip for Bombay's main airport, Santa Cruz.

The German 'plane ended up stuck in soft mud, but seemed to have escaped major damage, unlike the Japanese liner.

Officials say the 'plane should be recovered easily. It had been carrying nineteen passengers, mostly trade union leaders returning from a seminar in East Germany.

The aircraft, an Illyushin turbo-prop, landed despite a previous warning from Santa Cruz air control to the pilot that he should not mistake the Juhu strip for the main airport.
