  • Description

Finance Ministers of the 12 countries sharing the multinational airline Air Afrique met in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast on Monday to discuss the company's financial situation.

The Ministers suggested in a communique issued after the conference that the African, Malagasy and Mauritian Common Organisation (OCAMM) should consider a proposal to establish a multinational shipping company.

The proposal was initially made by the Ivory Coast Finance Minister M. Konan Bedie who suggested that the shipping company should be run on the same lines as Air Afrique.

The suggestion that OCAMM Secretary-General should study the proposal was made in the presence of the Secretary-General himself. M. Failou Kane, who attended the one-day conference in the National Assembly building in Abidjan.

During the meeting M. Kane outlined ways in which the company could tackle its tax problems.

The airline, founded in March, 1962, owes back taxes for seven years up to February 1, this year, when it was given a special fiscal statute. The countries which shares Air Afrique are Cameroun, the Central African Republic, and Chad, Congo Brazziville, Dahomey, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mauritania Niger, Senegal, Togo and Upper Volta.
