TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: CARR: "I should think that the people of Uganda themselves would be the last to be shocked by the news that the Archbishop's body has been disposed of in the usual way. In order to emphasise this, even the racialist and minority regimes in Pretoria and in Rhodesia are not as callous in their treatment of the dead or of their bereaved loved ones. The question is how much longer will the people of Uganda have to endure this?"

SEQ. 5: IMATHIU: "I am sure the late Archbishop Luwum (indistinct) persecution even the mouth of gun when those cruel inhuman soldiers of Amin visited that night in search for arms. He realised that he was facing to die. The least of the things you read about the death, persecution, are (indistinct) the mouth of Christians, suffering calamity, poverty, danger are very common experiences which people, Christians in Uganda and other parts of the world have experienced."

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

In London the former Bishop of Uganda now the Bishop of Ipswich, said on his return from Kenya where he attended the memorial service, that he too is quite sure that Archbishop Luwun was murdered. He quoted sources which he described as "utterly reliable" as saying that they had seen the Archbishop's body with three bullet wounds in it. Churchmen have been generally indignant at the summary disposal of the body of Archbishop Luwun, without Christian ceremonies.

Background: In Nairobi, Kenya, the General Secretary of the All-African Council of Churches, Canon Burgess Carr, has spoken out against the death and subsequent disposal of the body of the Archbishop of Uganda, Dr. Nanani Luwum.

SYNOPSIS: Canon Carr spoke about the tragedy at a news conference, saying he was satisfied that the Archbishop had been murdered.

Clergymen and other mourners gathered at a church in Nairobi later on Saturday (19 February) to attend a memorial service for Archbishop Luwum, who is alleged to have died in a car crash in Kampala last week. There has been world-wide scepticism towards the official version of his death -- which was sorrowfully voiced at the service by Kenyan Bishop, Lawi Imathiu.
