  • Description

THE LARGEST ARTIFICIAL LAKE IN AFRICA. IT CAME INTO BEING YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WHEN GHANA'S PRESIDENT KWAME NKRUMA OPENED THE BIGGEST STAGE OF THE GIANT VOLTA DAM PROJECT.

HE GAVE THE SIGNAL FOR TWO SLUICE GATES ON TWO DIVERSION TUNNELS TO BE CLOSED, WHICH SET THE VOLTA RIVER FILLING THE NEW MAN-MADE LAKE.

AN UMBRELLA SHIELDED THE GHANAIAN LEADER FROM THE FIERCE TROPICAL SUN WHEN HE ARRIVED AT THE DAM SITE, AT AKOSOMBO, ABOUT 70 MILES (112 KMS) NORTH-EAST OF ACCRA.

THE DAM AND LAKE ARE PART OF THE GBP70 MILLION STERLING HYDRO-ELECTRIC PROJECT, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO SUPPLY CHEAP ELECTRICITY FOR INDUSTRIAL EXPANSION AND INVOLVING THE RESETTLEMENT OF SOME 27,000 PEOPLE.

IT IS HOPED THAT THE LAKE MAY ALSO BE THE BASIS OF A NEW FISHING INDUSTRY.
