  • Description

IN BLANTYRE FINAL TOUCHES ARE BEING PUT TO DECLARATIONS FOR MALAWI'S REPUBLIC DAY ON JULY 6. MR. KAMUZU BANDA, WHO WAS JAILED BY THE CENTRAL AFRICAN FEDERATION, BUT CAME OUT OF JAIL TO SEE THE BREAK-UP OF THE FEDERATION AND BECOME PRIME MINISTER, IS TO BE THE COUNTRY'S FIRST PRESIDENT.

GUESTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE ALREADY POURING INTO BLANTYRE AND MALAWI'S ADMINISTRATIVE CAPITAL OF ZOMBA, 40 MILES AWAY, FOR THE CELEBRATIONS WHICH WILL MARK MALAWI BECOMING A REPUBLIC.

UNTIL NOW THE COUNTRY HAS HAD QUEEN ELIZABETH AS ITS HEAD OF STATE AND DR. BANDA, WHO IS SOLE NOMINEE FOR THE POST OF PRESIDENT, HAS BEEN HIS COUNTRY'S PRIME MINISTER.

BEFORE INDEPENDENCE TWO YEARS AGO MALAWI WAS KNOWN AS NYASSALAND AND FORMED PART OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN FEDERATION OF RHODESIA AND NYASSALAND. DR. BANDA WAS ONE OF THE LEADERS OF THE FIGHT AGAINST THE FEDERATION AND WAS JAILED FOR HIS OPPOSITION.

AS REPUBLIC DAY DRAWS NEARER THE LAST CEREMONIAL ACTS OF BRITISH PRESENCE HAVE BEEN TAKING PLACE UNDER THE RETIRING GOVERNOR-GENERAL, SIR GLYN JONES. THE MOST COLOURFUL OF THESE WAS THE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY PARADE AT ZOMBA ON JUNE 11, THIS YEAR.
