    KENYA YESTERDAY (MONDAY) JOINED MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD IN CELEBRATING THE COMING OF AGE OF THE UNITED NATIONS. HUNDREDS WATCHED THE 21ST ANNIVERSARY PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS OF NAIROBI.

    PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA WAS TO TAKE THE SALUTE BUT AT THE LAST MINUTE HIS PLACE WAS TAKEN BY VICE PRESIDENT MURUMBI.

    WATCHING THE PARADE WERE SENIOR CABINET MINISTERS, AMBASSADORS, AND THE LEADER OF KENYA'S OPPOSITION PARTY, MR. OGINGA ODINGA.

    THE COLOURFUL PARADE INCLUDED UNITS FROM THE NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE, BOY SCOUTS, NURSES, SCHOOL GROUPS AND THE CITY'S FIRE BRIGADE.

    SIMILAR PARADES WERE HELD IN SIX PROVINCIAL CENTRES IN KENYA.

    THE THEME OF THIS YEAR'S UNITED NATIONS DAY WAS THE "PROBLEM OF REFUGEES," AND MANY FUNCTIONS HAVE BEEN ARRANGED IN NAIROBI TO AID AFRICAN AND ASIAN REFUGEES.

    IN HIS U.N. DAY MESSAGE, THE SECRETARY GENERAL, U THANT, SAID THE UNITED NATIONS WAS BORN OF TROUBLE AND ITS MAIN FUNCTION WAS TO FACE PROBLEMS AND CRISES. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE UNITED NATIONS MUST FACE UP TO THE APPALLING DANGERS OF NUCLEAR ARMAMENT AND PROLIFERATION.
