  • Description

French and Ivorian students of Reims University handed over medical supplies and equipment worth about 975,000 French francs (GBP75,000 sterling) to the Ivory Coast Minister of Health on Wednesday (26 August). The money had been raised by members of a French-Ivorian club, the Club Fernand, at the University, through appeals to all the other universities in France.

The ceremony took place at the Medical Supplies Depot in Abidjan. In a short speech, the General Secretary of the Club Fernand, M. Djenis Ferdinand, said he was very happy that the club had been able to help the Ivory Coast Government in this way. He said the funds had been raised in one evening in Reims, when students from other French universities had pledged their support.

In reply, the Ivory Coast Minister of Health, M. Hyppolite Aye, thanked the students on behalf of his country for what he called "this happy and humanitarian gesture". He then walked round looking at the supplies that had been presented.

The equipment includes an operating table and radiography equipment. There was also a full range of medicine from the French Pharmacopoeia, and powdered milk for children. The medicines and powdered milk will be used in country districts in the Ivory Coast.
