  • Description

TAXLI AIR BASE, THAILAND--THE U.S. AIR FORCE TODAY DISPLAYED ITS LATEST FIGHTER-BOMBER, THE CONTROVERSIAL F111A, AND SAID IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO SOUTHEAST ASIA NOT FOR TESTING BUT TO FULFILL COMBAT REQUIREMENTS.

PEKING RADIO SAY TODAY THE FIVE ARRIVED SUNDAY AND BOMBED NORTH VIETNAM THE SAME DAY. THERE WAS NO CONFIRMATION.

COL. IVAN DETHMAN ADMITTED THERE ARE STILL SOME PLANS ON THE MILLION, 2,000 MILE-AN-HOUR AIRCRAFT.

DETHMAN SPOKE TO CORRESPONDENTS WHO WERE FLOWN FROM BANGKOK TO SEE THE SIX F111A THAT FLEW IN FROM NELLIS AIR BASE IN NEVADA VIA GUAM SUNDAY.

UNDER QUESTIONING HE SAID IT DOESN'T HAVE AS MANY BACKUP SYSTEMS FOR CONTROLLING IT IN FLIGHT AS OTHER FIGHTER-BOMBER DO. THE IMPLICATION WAS THAT THE PLANE MIGHT BE RELATIVELY MORE VULNERABLE TO BATTLE DAMAGE.

DETHMAN ALSO SAID THAT NO SYSTEM WAS YET-BEEN INSTALLED FOR DESTROYING THE COCKPIT CAPSULE WITH WHICH THE PILOTS CAST THEMSELVES OUT OF THE PLANE WHEN IT IS TOO BADLY DAMAGED TO FLY.

THE CAPSULE IS A MODULE WHICH WILL FLOAT ON WATER OR PROVIDE SHELTER ON LAND, BUT IF ONE SHOULD BE CAPTURED INTACT THE ENEMY MIGHT BE ABLE TO GATHER VALUABLE INTELLIGENCE FROM IT.

ALL OF THE PILOT INSTRUMENTS INCLUDING THE BOMBING ATTACK RADAR SCREEN ARE INSIDE THE CAPSULE.
