  • Description

THE STUDENTS WHO DESCRIBE THEMSELVES AS WEST BERLIN'S "EXTRA-PARLIAMENTARY OPPOSITION" DEMONSTRATED YESTERDAY AGAINST THE EXTRADITION TO WEST GERMANY OF ARMY DESERTERS AND DRAFT DODGERS. THE DEMONSTRATION CAME AS THE BRITISH, FRENCH AND UNITED STATES COMMANDANTS IN THE CITY AUTHORISED THE WEST BERLIN SENATE TO RESUME EXTRADITION PROCEEDINGS.

ABOUT 5,000 DEMONSTRATORS TOOK PART IN THE MARCH, FROM THE PRINCIPAL SHOPPING STREET -- THE KURFURSTENDAMM -- TO THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, WHERE A TEACH-IN ON THE SITUATION WAS BEING STAGED.

THE PREVIOUS DAY (THURSDAY) THE DEMONSTRATION HAD BEEN BANNED BY A POLICE ORDER, BUT A WEST BERLIN COURT RULED THAT THE BAN WAS UNLAWFUL.

A WEEK AGO (2 AUGUST) THERE WERE VIOLENT CLASHES BETWEEN THE STUDENTS AND POLICE IN THE KURFURSTENDAMM IN WHICH MORE THAN 120 PEOPLE, INCLUDING 96 POLICEMEN, WERE INJURED.

THEN THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE CALLING FOR THE RELEASE OF SEVEN ARMY DESERTERS WHO HAD BEEN RETURNED TO WEST GERMANY TO AWAIT TRIAL.

SINCE THEN SEVERAL MEN WHO HAD BEEN IMPRISONED WERE RELEASED. WHILE THE THREE WESTERN POWERS, WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EXTRA-MILITARY STATUS OF THE CITY, DISCUSSED THE LEGAL SITUATION FOLLOWING SOVIET REPRESENTATIONS.

YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THE WESTERN ALLIES ISSUED A STATEMENT SAYING IT WAS THEIR MAIN CONCERN TO PRESERVE THE SPECIAL DEMILITARISED STATUS OF BERLIN. IT SAID THEY REGARDED THE PRESENCE THERE OF DESERTERS FROM THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC ARMED FORCES AS INCONSISTENT WITH THAT STATUS.
