  • Description

A delighted crowd of 60,000 watched the "Olympic" Labour Festival of Games - not to be connected with thee Roman Olympics - held in Copenhagen August 21. Over 3,000 workers from Denmark, sweden and Germany competed in sports events designed more for the creation of laughter than the creation of records.

Each event was connected with the local industry. Perhaps most laughs came in a 1,000 metre "barrel relay" race. Competitors had to run for 80 metres before diving into a barrel filled with dye.

On emerging in say brilliant red, his colleague would dash to the next barrel for soaking in another brilliant hue.

Muscular ladies from Danish breweries pulled each other in a courageous tug-of-war battle - a good advert for the local lager collapsed afterwards - exhausted.

The timber was represented by strong-armed stalwarts who sawed through great logs of wood as easily as butter and as quickly as machines.

Postmen from Sweden and Denmark brought roars of delight from children when they had their special race. First a 300 - metre dash with a large parcel, followed by a stiff race on tiny children's tricycles. The final, and gruelling part, was a sprint with their fellow postal-clerk contained in a sack over the shoulder.

Both men and women sausage-factory workers had an excellent chance to settle old scores when they mounted a narrow pole - over a pool of water - and hit out at each other with the longest sausages yet seen. The result of most encounters was a quick plunge into cold water below.
