For a week rain and rising rivers have dislocated life in many rural districts in Kashmir and Western Pakistan and the River Indus in India is reported to have changed its course suddenly and catastrophically in Lahore state - 14,000 villagers fled from their homes.

While Kashmiri villagers seek dry ground their Premier, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed, has asked India for 150,000 tons of food grain. He said Kashmir's entire food crops and some food stores have been destroyed.
