  • Description

For several days Government troops have been moving up Cambodia's Route 7, under heavy fire from vietcong, North Vietnamese and pro-Sihanouk Cambodian forces.

They are on their way to the beleaguered and isolated provincial capital Kompong Cham, 50 miles (80 Kms) north-east of Phnom Penh.

The reinforcements were checked by pro-Sihanouk forces near Prey Totung, in the Prek Tameak area about 15 miles (26 Kms) north-east of Phnom Penh. The Cambodian troops found the Mekong river-bank town of Pra Passap completely destroyed by an overnight attack.

Aircraft have been unable to land in Kompong Cham's airfield, as the pressure on the town from Vietcong and North Vietnamese forces has been building up.

With route 7 cut off, the only means of supplying its beleaguered arisen has been parachute drops from the air
Highway 4, to the southwest port of Kompong Som is also cut.

On Thursday (19 November), the Vietcong shelled the cross-roads town of ???, where the strategic highways 6 and 7 meet, about 44 miles (70 Kms) from Phnom Penh, but without serious damage, according to the Cambodian High Command.

On the night of the 21-22 November, Kompong Cham's airfield came under ??? fire once again.

The same night, there were a series of strikes on throughout Cambodia.

The Cambodian High Command said one of the attacks, with mortar and automatic fire, was on the town of Kirivong near the South Vietnamese border, and the other at Kompong Leng, 56 miles (90 Kms) north-west of the capital, which was attacked for the second successive night.
