Background: INTRODUCTION The Government of Brazil has been celebrating the thirteenth anniversary of 1964's military coup. The present regime, under the Presidency of General Ernesto Geisel, took power at the end of May in 1974 following a period of unrest which involved authoritarian governments faced with severe urban terrorism.
SYNOPSIS: One of the major celebrations took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's principal city.
President Geisel, who on election promised to restore democracy, has so far been unable to meet his original plans. News censorship and political arrests still continue, despite the air of public joviality on occasions like this.
The Prefect of the City of Rio, Dr Marcos Tamoyo, raised the flag during the official celebrations -- marking the day that the ten-year-old left wing regime which followed a benevolent dictatorship was overthrown. Geisel's regime followed a five-year period of uncertainty under the rule of a three-man military junta, marked by guerrilla activity.
President Geisel himself presided over the celebrations -- only hours before closing parliament in a crises of government.
The crises arose over the rejection in a parliament by the only legal opposition party of a judicial reform bill.
In closing parliament, President Geisel said it would only be for a brief period -- in order to reintroduce the rejected bill and other political reforms. In a nationwide political broadcast, President Geisel said the other political reforms would be 'indispensable for the welfare of the nation's -- but he didn't specify exactly what they would be.
