  • Description

APPROXIMATELY 150 PEOPLE, MAINLY YOUTHS, DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE THE OFFICES OF THE TIMES OF ZAMBIA ON THURSDAY (9 MARCH). THEY WERE PROTESTING AGAINST AN ALLEGED CRITICISM OF PRESIDENT KAUNDA IN A RECENT EDITORIAL.

EVENTS LEADING TO THE DEMONSTRATION CONCERN THE IMPRISONMENT OF LUSAKA'S MAYOR, WHITSON BANDA, AND THE LOCAL UNIP YOUTH CONSTITUENCY SECRETARY, MR. EUSTACE MUMBA. BOTH MEN WERE IMPRISONED FOR CHARGES INVOLVING CONTEMPT OF COURT. HOWEVER, ON MARCH 4TH PRESIDENT KAUNDA EXERCISED HIS CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS AND GRANTED MUMBA'S RELEASE. IT WAS THIS ACTION THAT THE 'TIMES' APPEARED TO QUESTION IN ITS EDITORIAL.

EARLIER IN THE WEEK, THE PARLIAMENTARY CAUCUS OF THE RULING UNITED NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PARTY (UNIP) ADOPTED A RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE TIMES OF ZAMBIA FOR ITS 'REBUKABLE ATTITUDE IN FOSTERING ALIEN INTERESTS CONTRARY TO THIS NATION.'
ABOUT 20 POLICE STOOD BY, BUT THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS. LATER, (8 MARCH) THE TIMES POINTED OUT THEY DESCRIBED DR. KAUNDA'S INTENTIONS AS 'SINCERE AND WORTHY'. THEIR ONLY CONCERN WAS THAT THE REASONS COULD NOT BE MADE PUBLIC. HOWEVER, THEY SAID, THE ACCEPTANCE BY THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THESE REASONS HAD PROVIDED EVERYONE WITH REASSURANCE.
