THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT HAS SENT IN PLANES AND SHIPS TO EVACUATE A QUARTER-MILLION PEOPLE LIVING IN THE DISASTER AREA.THOUSANDS MORE MADE HOMELESS BY THE FIERCE LAVA FLOWS ARE NOW FLEEING WESTWARDS TO GOVERNMENT RELIEF CAMPS.NOT ONLY HAVE THEY LOST THEIR HOMES, BUT THE LAND ON WHICH THEY DEPEND FOR A LIVING HAS BEEN RENDERED USELESS BY ASH, LAVA AND STONES.THE INDONESIAN RED CROSS SAYS IT WILL BE TEN YEARS BEFORE CROPS WILL GROW AGAIN.

IN OTHER PARTS, BIG CROWDS HAVE WADED INTO THE SEA AND PRAYED TO THEIR GODS TO STOP THE "SACRED" MOUNT AGUNG -- MYTHICAL HOME OF THE BALINESE GODS -- DESTROYING THEIR HOMES AND PADDYFIELDS.BUT ALL THE TIME, FRESH REPORTS FROM OUTLYING AREAS PUSH THE DEATH TOLL STEADILY HIGHER.THE UNITED NATIONS HAS CABLED PRESIDENT SOEKARNO OFFERING THE VICTIMS ASSISTANCE.
