Background: Republican Senator Jacob Javits easily retained his Senate seat for New York in the United States mid-term elections on tuesday (5 November) defeating former Attorney-General, Ramsey Clark.
The contest between the two men was at times vitriolic. Senator Javits accused his Democrat opponent of prolonging the Vietnam war by giving encouragement to the North Vietnamese. he said Clark had undermined American efforts to end the war by visiting Hanoi at a critical stage during negotiations.
Over the whole country, the Democrats tightened their grip on Congress and captured a number of State Governorships.
As the final results were checked it appeared the Democrats had about 40 more seats in the House of Representatives and at least four more seats in the Senate, giving them an overwhelming majority in both chambers.
