  • Description

A freak tornado and windstorm hit part of Connecticut in the Northern USA on Wednesday (3 October) killing one person, and causing millions of dollars worth of damage. President Carter has declared the area a national disaster zone, making it's residents eligible for Federal aid.

SYNOPSIS: The tornado and accompanying high winds cut a swathe of damage more than three kilometres long, and more than five hundred metres wide, through the town of Windsor. Winds of up to 86 miles an hour destroyed 65 homes in a colonial village section. Almost every plane in the nearby Bradley Aircraft Museum and at the Bradley airport private plane terminal was demolished. Among them were twenty rescue helicopters normally used in emergencies such as this.... damaged costing more than fifty million dollars. The next day residents were picking through the wreckage of their homes, and exchanging stories on how they had managed to escape injury. Authorities were amazed that only one death resulted from the tornado. With so much damage they had expected a much higher toll. Most residents were insured - but insurance doesn't fully compensate for the loss of a home.
