  • Description

RECENT HEAVY RAIN IN SENEGAL HAS CAUSED SERIOUS DAMAGE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. ONE OF THE MAIN PROBLEMS THE DOWNPOUR HAS BROUGHT IS THE BREAKDOWN IN ROAD COMMUNICATIONS. MANY BRIDGES AND ROADS HAVE BEEN BREACHED BY FLOODING.

ONE CASUALTY OF THE FLOODING IS A SECTION OF THE DAKAR-KAOLACK ROAD, ABOVE THE VILLAGE OF FIMELA. ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-FOUR FEET (50 METRES) OF ROAD SURFACE HAVE BEEN WASHED AWAY BY THE RAIN.

THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT AT KAOLACK HAS BEEN CALLED IN TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE. TWENTY TRUCKS AND HUNDRED WORKMEN ARE BEING EMPLOYED. SOLDIERS FROM THE SENEGAL ARMY ARE ALSO HELPING.

PUBLIC WORKS MINISTER MADY CISSOKO VISITED THE SITE, AND DISCUSSED THE OPERATION WITH THE ENGINEER IN CHARGE AND THE GOVERNOR OF THE REGION.

TONS OF SAND AND BALLAST ARE BEING BROUGHT FROM BASES SOME MILES AWAY TO REPAIR THE BREACH. IT IS HOPED TO HAVE THE ROAD AT LEAST PARTIALLY IN SERVICE AGAIN WITHIN A WEEK.
