  • Description

South Africa and Chile were tied at one match all after the first two singles matches in their Davis Cup American zone tennis final played in Santiago, Chile on Friday (23 April).

Bernie Mitton put South Africa ahead in the opening singles match by beating Patricio Cornejo 6-4; 3-6; 7-5; 7-5. However, Chilean player Jaime Fillol evened the score with a 7-5; 8-6; 6-3 win over Ray Moore.

Mitton's win was in contrast to last year's American zone final when he lost to Cornejo in a series that chile won 5-0.

In the second singles, Chilean number one player Fillol, showing no ill-effects from a recent cold, beat Moore in straight sets. But Fillol had to fight hard for every point, particularly in the second set which he won 8-6.

SYNOPSIS: In the second singles match the Chilean number one player Jaime Fillol played South Africa's Ray Moore.
