  • Description

UNDER AN AGREEMENT SIGNED TODAY (THURSDAY), BRITAIN AND FRANCE ARE TO WORK TOGETHER IN DEVELOPING AND BUILDING A SUPERSONIC AIRLINER. THE AIRLINER, TO BE CALLED CONCORD, WILL BE A DELTA DESIGN AND CAPABLE OF SPEEDS UP TO 1,400 MILES AN HOUR.

THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED AT A CEREMONY AT LANCASTER HOUSE IN LONDON BY THE FRENCH AMBASSADOR TO BRITAIN, M. GEOFFROY DE COURCEL, AND THE BRITISH AVIATION MINISTER, MR. JULIAN AMERY.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THE PROJECT WILL COST WELL OVER GBP100 MILLION AND THE WORK WILL BE UNDERTAKEN JOINTLY BY THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION AND SUD AVIATION OF FRANCE.

COMPLETE DETAILS HAVE NOT YET BEEN ANNOUNCED BUT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT BRITAIN WILL BUILD A LONG-RANGE VERSION OF CONCORD TO CARRY 90 PASSENGERS 3,700 MILES NON-STOP, WHILE FRANCE TACKLES A VERSION TO FLY 100 PASSENGERS UP TO 2,800 MILES NON-STOP. THE DESIGN IS BASICALLY FRENCH BUT POWERED BY BRITISH ENGINES.

THE PROTOTYPES ARE EXPECTED TO BE AIRBORNE BY 1966, AND THE FIRST CONCORD SHOULD BE OPERATIONAL BY 1969 OR 1970. AIR EXPERTS ESTIMATE THAT ABOUT 130 OF THE AIRLINERS WOULD HAVE TO BE SOLD FOR THE PROJECT TO PAY FOR ITSELF.

IT IS GENERALLY UNDERSTOOD THAT THE UNITED STATES IS ALSO CONCERNED IN DEVELOPING A SUPERSONIC AIRLINER BUT IS AIMING AT ONE TO FLY AT 2,000 MILES AND HOUR -- OR ABOUT THREE TIMES THE SPEED OF SOUND. THIS AIRLINER IS ALSO EXPECTED TO BECOME FULLY OPERATIONAL BY 1970.
