The Union of European Football Association (UEFA) Cup second round was completed on November 7, producing a night of numerous goals and surprises. In Brussels Belgian league leaders Anderlecht turned on dazzling display of attacking football to defeat Italian side Fiorentina by six goals to two. The Italians had been held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg, and soon found themselves floundering in the wake o some devastating Belgian finishing. Left back Michel De Groote opened the Anderlecht scoring with powerful shot from 25 metres mid-way through the first half. Fiorentina drew level with a penalty from Socrates six minutes into the second half, but Anderlecht then overran their defence with goals from Alex Czerniatinski and Erwin Vandenbergh, both in the 60th minute, sealing the fate of the Italian side. Further Anderlecht pressure resulted in scores for substitute Walter De Greef and penalty-takers Frankie Vercauteren and Enzo Scifi. Pasquale Tachini added a second consolation goal for Fiorentina.

Yugoslavs Partizan Belgrade won through to the third round by overturning a 6-2 deficit imposed by English side Queens Park Rangers after the first leg. Partizan capitalised on a dreadful display by the Rangers defense to win by four goals to nil and take the tie on the away goals rule.
