  • Description

The United Nations Security Council voted on Monday (21 July) to send a formal appeal to Egypt's President Anwar Sadat to drop his objections to the renewal of the mandate for the U.N. peacekeeping forces stationed in Sinai.

The mandate for the 3,919 strong Emergency Forces expires on Thursday (24 July). Last week, Egypt said that it could not be renewed unless the Security Council adopted a political decision on the question of Israeli withdrawal from occupied Arab territory.

Thirteen of the fifteen-member Security Council voted for Council President, Eugenio Plaja, of Italy, to send the appeal. China and Iraq did not take part.

In a televised speech in Cairo on Tuesday (22 July), President Sadat said that he had received the appeal and would study all aspects of the situation before reaching a decision.

On Wednesday afternoon (23 July) Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ismail Fahmi, announced that Egypt had agreed to extend the peacekeeping forces' mandate for three months. He said the decision had been taken unanimously by the country's National Security Council.
