    The Minister of Finance Min Haskins of Botswana, the Minister of Finance Min Peete Peete of Lesotho, the Minister of Economic Affairs Haak of South Africa and the Minister of Finance Min L Lovill of Swaziland met at noon today at a ceremony in Pretoria at which a new Customs Union Agreement between the Republic of Botswana, the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Republic of South Africa and the Kingdom of Swaziland was signed by them on behalf of their respective Governments.

    The Minister of Finance Min Haskins of Botswana, the Minister of Finance Min Peete Peete of Lesotho, the Minister of Economic Affairs Haak of South Africa and the Minister of Finance Min L Lovill of Swaziland met at noon today at a ceremony in Pretoria at which a new Customs Union Agreement between the Republic of Botswana, the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Republic of South Africa and the Kingdom of Swaziland was signed by them on behalf of their respective Governments.

    This Agreement provides for the continuation of the customs union which has existed since 1910.

    The new Agreement includes provision for:
    (i) the new Agreement includes provision for: the duty free interchange without quantitative control of domestic products;
    (ii) the free interchange of duty paid goods imported from outside the common customs area;
    (iii) the levying of uniform customs, excise and sales duties;
    (iv) consultation on the imposition and amendment of customs duties;
    (v) the imposition of additional duties for protective purposes by Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland;
    (vi) the maintenance or increase of external tariffs necessary for the protection of specified industries in Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland;
    (vii) regulating the marketing of Agricultural produce;
    (viii) a revised method of calculating the division of customs, excise and sales duty revenue;
    (ix) the establishment of machinery for inter-governmental consultation through a Customs Union Commission; and
    (x) other related matters
    The 1910 Agreement will be terminated when the new Agreement comes into operation on the 1st March, 1970, but the arrangements for the division of revenues are effective as from the 1st April, 1969.

    The text of the new Agreement will be published in the respective Government Gazettes tomorrow, 12th December.
