Background: INTRODUCTION: Some of the fiercest fighting since the outbreak of civil war in 1975 was reported in Beirut. But as Christian and Moslem forces fired shells at each other across the city life continued -- a Christening ceremony took place in the basement of a church in Hadath, a Christian district in the south of the capital. By Tuesday (2 June) Beirut was reported quiet. On sunday (31 May) both sides fired shells at packed holiday beaches. The attacks left 27 dead and nearly 300 wounded -- many of the victims were women and children.

SYNOPSIS: The Christian stronghold of East Beirut came under attack on Monday (1 June) after a brief overnight ceasefire.

At one point in the afternoon a shell was landing every eight seconds, and there was continuous sniping across the city.

In the aftermath of the latest violence has come widespread private condemnation of the Beirut militiamen. Many functions on both sides are now equipped with advance weapons capable of doing a great deal of damage in confined areas.

And as the fighting continues, a baby is christened in the basement of a church in Hadath, a Christian district in south East Beirut.

The basement has been transformed into a shelter and a place for prayer after continues shelling left four dead on Sunday (31 May). But now the two main factions, the Rightist Lebanese Front and the Moslem-backed National Movement, have made a commitment not to attack residential area, after the outcry over Sunday's violence.
