    The world champion rowing squad from East Germany made a good showing at the International Regatta in Lucerne last Sunday (9 July).

    In all, East Germany picked up four gold medals including the eights, in which they cracked the West.

    The regatta gave Olympic selectors a chance to choose their crews for the Olympic Games in Munich later this year.

    SYNOPSIS: In Lucerne, Switzerland, last Sunday, the semi-final competition in the international rowing regatta...and in the singles, it's boat number one with a crew from the Soviet Union crossing the finishing line first.

    In the double semi-finals, a Dutch crew in boat number eight were the winners.

    The regatta was seen as a good chance for Olympic selectors to choose their national crews for the Munich Olympics later this year.

    The fours final with coxswain was won by the West Germans.

    But the stars of the regatta were the East Germans. This year they managed to win four gold medals, including the fours without coxswain event seen here.

    The East Germans also took the final of eights in which they completely dominated the Western crews.
