Background: An explosion wrecked the Italian Consulate in London, UK, on Monday (24 March) and police believe it was caused by someone with a grudge rather than being the work of a terrorist group. Police detained an Italian man for questioning at his London home soon after the explosion.

SYNOPSIS: The five-storey Consulate building was gutted in the pre-drawn blast, which was so powerful that police at first suspected it had been caused by a one hundred pound (40 kilo) bomb. Firemen took several hours to put out the blaze. There was a gaping black hold ???here the consulate had stood in a row of nineteenth century houses in he Belgravia district.

The Consulate was empty at the time of the explosion and no-one was injured, but the records of the one-hundred and forty thousand Italians living in the British capital were destroyed. Only the back wall of the building remains standing.

Police believe an incendiary device, rather than high explosives, set off the blast and they are working on the theory that it was the result of a personal vendetta or grudge.
