The 40,000-ton U.S. aircraft carrier WASP left Boston, U.S. Nov 22 to relieve the aircraft carrier Shangri-la, now on patrol off Central America.
Wasp will join five destroyers which, at the request of the Guatemalan and Nicaraguan governments, are patrolling the Central American coast, guarding against any communist-inspired invasion attempts.
Manned by a 2,400-member crew, Wasp is specially equipped for anti-submarine work. She recently returned from the coasts of Africa where she stood by for use in connection with the Congo.
Sailing orders meant cancellation of Thanksgiving leave for her crew who will now spend the traditional major U.S. National holiday at sea.
