BRITAIN'S NEXT GENERAL ELECTION IS TO BE ON THE 31ST OF NEXT MONTH, MR. HAROLD?

  • Description

BRITAIN'S NEXT GENERAL ELECTION IS TO BE ON THE 31ST OF NEXT MONTH, MR. HAROLD WILSON, THE PRIME MINISTER, ANNOUNCED IN LONDON TODAY (MONDAY). THE LEADERS OF THE THREE MAIN POLITICAL PARTIES COMMENTED ON THE COMING ELECTION TONIGHT ON B.B.C. TELEVISION, AS THE PARTY ORGANISERS SWUNG INTO ACTION AT THEIR PARTY HEADQUARTERS IN LONDON FOR THE BIG CAMPAIGNING BATTLE AHEAD.

MR. WILSON'S LABOUR PARTY ENDED 13 YEARS ON CONSERVATIVE RULE WHEN IT WON THE OCTOBER, 1964, GENERAL ELECTION WITH A SLENDER FIVE-SEAT OVERALL MAJORITY, NOW ONLY THREE SEATS, IN THE 630-SEAT HOUSE OF COMMONS. ALL THE SIGNS FROM PUBLIC OPINION POLLS AND BY ELECTIONS INDICATE THAT LABOUR WOULD GAIN A CLEAR MARGIN IN AN EARLY NATIONAL CONTEST.

TONIGHT, THE ??? LONDON BROKERS WERE BUSY TAKING ELECTION BETS. LADBROKE'S WERE QUOTING ABOUT TO WIN AT SIX TO ONE ON, AND SEVEN TO TWO AGAINST THE CONSERVATIVES, ODDS VARIED, BUT THE BOOKMAKERS SEEMED GENERALLY IN FAVOUR OF A LABOUR WIN. PARLIAMENT WILL BE DISSOLVED ON THE 10TH OF MARCH, AND THE NEW PARLIAMENT SUMMONED ON THE 18TH OF APRIL.

MR. WILSON PRESIDED AT A SPECIAL CABINET MEETING THIS MORNING AT 10 DOWNING STREET, WHERE HE TOLD HIS COLLEAGUES OF HIS DECISION. LATER HE RESUMED SCHEDULED ENGAGEMENTS, FINDING TIME FOR A WALK WITH MRS. WILSON IN THE WINTER SUNSHINE THROUGH ST. JAMES PARK.

LATER TONIGHT, MR. WILSON MADE HIS FIRST PUBLIC STATEMENT ABOUT THE ELECTION ON THE BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION'S TELEVISION PROGRAMME "PANORAMA"...

MR. WILSON COMMUNICATED HIS DECISION TO MR. EDWARD HEATH, THE CONSERVATIVE OPPOSITION PARTY LEADER, THIS AFTERNOON AT THE COMMONS. MR. HEATH LEFT THE COMMONS FOR A DISCUSSION WITH THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY CHAIRMAN. LATER, HE TOLD A B.B.C. INTERVIEWER....
THE LIBERAL PARTY LEADER, MR. GRIMOND, HAD ALSO HEARD THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ELECTION DATE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER IN ADVANCE OF THE PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT. HE ALSO SPOKE OF HIS PARTY FEELINGS ABOUT MR. WILSON'S DECISION AND HOW HE EXPECTED THE VOTERS TO RESPOND AT THE ELECTION TO GOVERNMENT POLICIES....
