  • Description

ABOUT 1,000 PEOPLE CHANTING "STALINISM OUT, DEMOCRACY IN" AND WAVING ANTI-SOVIET AND PRO-CZECHOSLOVAK PLACARDS DEMONSTRATED NEAR THE SOVIET EMBASSY IN LONDON TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY). THEY INCLUDED MEMBERS OF THE LEFT-WING VIETNAM SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT WHO WERE RECENTLY DEMONSTRATING AGAINST AMERICAN ACTION IN VIETNAM.

THE MAIN BODY OF DEMONSTRATORS WAS UNABLE TO APPROACH THE EMBASSY BECAUSE POLICE CLOSED TWO BIG IRON GATES LEADING TO KENSINGTON PALACE GARDENS, WHERE THE EMBASSY BUILDING IS SITUATED. ABOUT 80 POLICE STOOD BY IN CASE THE DEMONSTRATION GOT OUT OF HAND, BUT IT REMAINED PEACEFUL. LATER, THE DEMONSTRATORS -- ACCOMPANIED BY POLICE -- MARCHED TO THE SOVIET TRADE EXHIBITION AT EARL'S COURT, ABOUT TWO MILES (3 KMS) AWAY.

ANOTHER GROUP OF DEMONSTRATORS TRIED TO GET INTO THE BULGARIAN EMBASSY IN KENSINGTON, BUT WERE PREVENTED FROM DOING SO BY POLICE. SOME OF THE DEMONSTRATORS THREW STONES, SMASHING THE WINDOWS OF CARS PARKED NEAR THE EMBASSY, WHILE OTHERS CLIMBED STATUES TO SHOUT "RUSSIANS GO HOME".
